A report published by World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) on 20th December, 2011 records significant growth in patent filing for 2010. Patent and trademark filings grew by 7.2% and 11.8% respectively in 2010 compared to growth of 5.1% in the global gross domestic product (GDP). China and the United States (US) have accounted for the greatest share of the increased filings.
The Report covers resident filings, filing overseas and also trends in pending patent application in respect of patents, trademarks and industrial designs. China is ahead of US and Japan in respect of patents, trademarks and industrial designs. However, in respect of overseas filings, Japan heads the list followed by the USA. China has only 5% filings abroad. In respect of trademarks Germany recorded the maximum number of filings worldwide.
Analysed across different fields of activity or technology, computer technology, electrical machinery, audio-visual technology and medical technology accounted for the largest shares of patent filings worldwide. While Finland and Sweden led the information communications and technologies, Belgium, India and Switzerland saw significant filings in pharmaceuticals.
Breaking down the filings into first, subsequent and multiple filings the report records that China, the Republic of Korea and the Russian Federation show larger share of new inventions or first filings. Statistics also reveal that patent activity is concentrated in high income countries and that total number of utility model applications filed across the world grew by 24% in 2010.
