Dr. Malathi Lakshmikumaran, Head (Life Sciences), Lakshmikumaran & Sridharan, delivered an exemplary talk at the Health & Pharma Conclave 2010 on Saturday, 25th September,2010 at the Indian School of Business (ISB), Hyderabad. The theme of the panel discussion was ‘Managing Change and Innovation’ in the healthcare and pharmaceutical sector.
As one of the distinguished panel speakers, she spoke on ‘Innovation and IP Management in the Pharmaceuticals sector'. She covered in detail, recent developments in patenting of Pharmaceutical and Biotechnological inventions in India as well as important changes and amendments in the Indian Patent Law. Dr. Malathi elaborated on patentable and non-patentable subject matter under Indian patent law and provided apt examples on discovery versus invention. She spoke at length about section 3(d) and provided details of the Novartis Gleevac judgment. She gave examples on how patents are important for the pharma sector and that they need to protect their invention till the expiry of the patent term.
Other speakers on the panel included Dr. Ajai Kumar, Founder Health Care Global Enterprise, Dr. P. Namperumalsamy, Chairman, Aravind Eye Care System and Dr. Ranjit Shahani, Country President and Managing Director, Novartis India Pvt. Ltd. The audience predominantly comprised of managers and decision makers in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, health-care and consulting sectors. Her enlightening talk on the subject was highly appreciated by one and all.
