E-payment of Customs duty mandatory for specified imports

10th September, 2012

E-payment of Customs duty will be mandatory from 17th September, 2012, for importers registered under Accredited Clients Programme (ACP) or those paying Customs duty of Rs. 1 lakh or more per Bill of Entry.

Last year, the Central Board of Excise & Customs by its Circular No. 33/2011-Cus., dated 29-7-2011 had specified these classes of importers for mandatory e-payment. But at that time, it did not specify the date of effect of such provision. The Circular No. 24/2012-Cus., dated 5-9-2012 now provides such date.

At present, Customs duty can be paid by voluntarily opting for electronic mode by other importers also. Since a large number of importers will now be required to pay duty mandatorily through the e-payment mode, the Central Board of Excise and Customs has requested its officers to provide assistance to trade and industry in adopting the new procedure.
