Panel discussion on “Patentability of Salicylic Acid Derivatives over Salicylic Acid”

FICPI, a world-wide organization of intellectual property attorneys, had organized the three-day FICPI India symposium from December 9-11, 2009 in New Delhi, India. The seminar focused on recent developments in the rapidly expanding Intellectual Property profession and the opportunities that India now affords.

Mr. V. Lakshmikumaran, Founder and Managing Partner of Lakshmi Kumaran & Sridharan (L&S) was one of the panel members for the session on: “Patentability of Salicylic Acid Derivatives over Salicylic Acid”. Other speakers on the panel included David Bannerman (Great Britain), Mark Wilson (USA), Roberto Pestilosi (Italy) and Hiroko Ejiri (Japan). The panel discussed the patentability of salicylic acid derivatives (including aspirin) on the basis that salicylic acid and its clinical properties were already known. The session comprised of attendees like intellectual property practitioners, attorneys, CEO’s, bioscientists and pharmaceutical industry representatives.
